Control over
one’s work has a strong impact on perceived stress, affecting both an
individual’s self esteem, as well as their ability to achieve work
goals. (Cost of Workplace Stress in
Australia, August 2008, Medibank Private) Concern over Management
decisions Job security Workload Lead to
Increased Pressure Stress Lead to
Issues in Trust Communication Absenteeism
& Presenteeism Visually the representation looks
solid, with a balance between top and bottom.
But notice that the foundation is
absenteeism and presenteeism. Presenteeism is the cost of decreased productivity in
stressed employees who are, indeed, showing up at work. *What is your foundation? *Would your employees agree?
Awareness + Breath = Change Employees can rarely alter the
actual cause of the external stressors.
But they can alter their response.
In my Work Events, I introduce the
idea of awareness of the physical and emotional signs of increased stress or
stimulation. Participants then learn
about breath, a tool that breaks the cycle of increased stimulation and
response. Awareness plus breath
provides an opportunity for a new personal response. Work

Comments Our employees really enjoyed David's
presentation, Got Stress?! Breathing
Exercises for Stress Reduction. He engaged the whole group in
exploring the causes of our stress, what happens to us when we are stressed,
and coached us on using mindful breathing techniques to reduce stress. He was able to get his message
across, "when the going gets tough, remember your breath-
inhale...exhale...ahhhh." *Greg Freitag,
